All-in-One
Island
ByTheresa McTammany
Work surface, dining area, prep station - this
island offers it all
Shortly
after Beth and Judson purchased a 30-year-old house
in Reston, Virginia, they realized the kitchen had
to go. The first-time remodelers turned to Jennifer
Turtle for answers. After addressing specific
kitchen needs and discussing user-friendly
alternatives, the couple decided to gut the cramped
10 x 12 foot space and start over. Topping the wish
list room for storage and a spot for casual dining.
The
linchpin of the 140-square-foot space is a
custom-designed island. The granite-topped unit is
multifunctional-pinch-hitting as additional work
space, informal eating area, or convenient
off-loading spot for groceries. The lower level is
used for casual dining; at the opposite end, the
counter is raised up 6 inches, allowing strategic
placement of power outlets that come in handy when
using electrical appliances.
The
couple experimented with several colors before
deciding on a deep cinnabar shade for the walls.
"Initially, it took some getting used to,"
says Beth. "Now we love the warmth and depth
the color gives the space. After all these months of
eating out, we've finally got a great place to come
home to."

The kitchen you are seeing pictures of is located in a Fairfax, VA home.
Paul and Lois; and their three children, Sarah, Daniel and Benjamin, make up the Culler family.
The family regularly tackles cooking projects together. Problems with their old kitchen included: a small space, bad layout, not enough storage and not enough light (for either tasks or aesthetics).
What did they want? More space, work areas to serve a family that all pitches in at meal time, a snack area, more light and windows to view their beautiful backyard.

Kitchen Focuses on Gourmet Cooking
By
Daina Darzin
Many upscale professionals desire the ultimate, professional, high-end kitchen, but they want it strictly for looks and status – a trophy to impress neighbors, rather than a real working environment. But that wasn’t the case with the VA-based Fairfax Interiors’ latest design challenge, in which the clients were genuinely passionate about their hobby of gourmet cooking.

Country
Elegance $87,000
With a comfortable at-home style

Some
families consider cooking a chore. For the owners of
this Virginia kitchen, cooking is a joy. As members
of a gourmet-cooking club and parents to teenage
sons who also like to cook, the couple's original
kitchen was in need of a serious face-lift.
"The owners required more storage and
countertop space, plus they needed room to share the
kitchen with guests. Fortunately they were amenable
to expanding," says Alison Martin, CKD, Allied
ASID, NKBA member, lead designer of Fairfax Interiors
in Fairfax, Virginia. "We took five feet out of
the back of the house, giving the kitchen
ninety-five square feet."

The backsplash over the range is made of handsome
ceramic tiles and stone that adds pattern and
texture to this monochromatic kitchen. The large
picture window over the sink provides a great view
of the backyard. A combination of white stain, track
lighting and stainless steel appliances gives this
kitchen a modern look, while the natural wide-plank
maple flooring and bead board-paneled island helps
retain the country feel.
